About
Hi! I'm Keely
I am currently 20 years old and live in North Wales but decided to do my undergraduate course and now teacher training in Liverpool.
I have wanted to work with children labelled as having SEN since I was 12 years old! I went on holiday to Egypt with my family and my sisters and I had a stay in a youth club whilst my parents went snorkelling.
I remember going in and there was a boy with Downs Syndrome in the corner trying to communicate with the staff using sign language. However, the staff didn't seem to be attempting to interact with him in return and it was so saddening to see.
I had done a few BSL classes in my secondary school and really wanted him to feel included and as though he belonged so I went up to him to play and used a bit of the BSL I have learnt to interact with him but as I was doing so I thought there were so many ways we were interacting with each other yet the staff did not even want to attempt one of these ways.
From then on I knew this is the area I wanted to work in, celebrating diversity and making individuals labelled as having SEN feel and know that they do belong.
Although I already had these views when I started my Special Educational Needs combined with Education degree, it has given me further insights and has changed the way I view the world and I feel that it will be so useful to share.
I am going to begin a primary SEN PGCE in September 2020 and an so excited to share my journey and hopefully encourage other aspiring teachers.
