Hello everyone,
A couple of days ago I did my first ever lesson. This was a story and activity to give the students an opportunity to get to know me as a teacher. I had previously had 2 school visits to meet the class but this gave me an opportunity to stand up in front of them before I officially start my placement on the 23rd November. I won't lie to you, I was nervous going in that morning, but I was also excited about being able to put my ideas into practice.
I chose to read The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. This is a lovely book about kindness and friendship. I got it over summer and absolutely adore it. I read this book because the class had been working on trying to be more kind and respectful towards each other and the classroom staff. The activity I did linked to the book and took about 20 minutes. I made a jigsaw puzzle and gave one piece to every child in the class. On the jigsaw puzzle the students had to write about why kindness and respect makes them happy and give examples of times they have been kind and respectful. Once this was done, the students had an opportunity to decorate their pieces however they wanted to. In between reading the book and starting the activity, I did give the students an opportunity to discuss examples of being kind and respectful and I wrote them on the board to give them a head start.
At the end of the lesson, with the help of the students, we put the jigsaw pieces together to complete the puzzle and I explained that each of the students and the kindness and respect they show all fit/join together to create a happy, kind and respectful class. I will attach a photo of the jigsaw pieces before they were worked on. I was really happy with the outcome of this story time/activity. The students all sat and listened to me so well and then were very engaged in the discussion and activity. I know this is unlikely to be the case every single time I teach but it was a lovely way to begin!
Take care and be sunny!
